a: Volcano ~

a: Volcano ~
b: getting a birds-eye view of creation itself

What:

"The best way to truly soar on your volcano tours however, is by helicopter. Flying over the unending flow of Kilauea Volcano is like getting a birds-eye view of creation itself. Seeing the molten lava and geysers of steam from a helicopter is a volcanic experience without parallel."

a: Volcano ~
b: a champagne bottle with a cork

What: "A simplified way to think of a volcano is like a champagne bottle with a cork. Keep that cork on and the bubbles in the champagne stay in solution. However, you remove that cork and all the dissolved carbon dioxide comes out of solution and bubbles form. Release that pressure fast enough and the bubbles form so quickly that you get that "pop" from the bottle."

Earthy Burpings

a: Volcano ~
b: huge volcanic burp

What: "A maar volcano is like a huge volcanic burp. With a maar volcano, magma flowing to the surface did not reach the top to create a cinder cone or lava flow. Instead the magma flow became blocked and the available ground water then became super-heated. The resulting steam pressure eventually became so great that it blew off the covering mantle and left a huge flat-floor crater."

a: volcano dome ~
b: congealed, dried toothpaste

What:

"If you imagine a volcano is like a tube of toothpaste then a lava dome is like the congealed, dried toothpaste that has come out of the tube. It doesn't move like a lava flow but grows from the inside as new magma comes up and pushes the already cooled magma upwards and outwards"

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
