I Don't Understand

a: Virgin birth ~
b: Cuckoo's egg laid in another bird's nest

What: "Virgin Birth is like a Cuckoo's egg laid in another bird's nest. While we sit on it, afraid to throw it out, we inadvertently hatch an unscriptural teaching. Why not change the phrase to Virgin Conception? It is more accurate, and more importantly, it is more scriptural."

Not That Straight Up Thing It Is.....

a: Virgin birth ~
b: a parable

What: "There is a dialectic or symbiosis at the heart of existence. The virgin birth is like a parable. It points to something valuable in life. It is not to be trivialized or prematurely resolved by what we insist is so-called 'reality.' What we define as 'reality' is always interpreted. It does not exist without interpretation. Christians insist that Jesus, the Messiah, the Christ, the anointed one of the lineage of David, is eternally alive not just as an abstract model to be emulated, but as someone walking next to you and me, whether we want it or not....It is this living presence of Jesus and the Holy Spirit for all times which the virgin birth is attempting to highlight."

Comparisons....

a: Virgin birth ~
b: Resurrection without the Empty Tomb

What: Some people claim that the Incarnation is the characteristic doctrine of Anglicanism. Unfortunately, many who claim to be Incarnational Anglicans express apathy, or even antipathy, toward the Virgin Birth. But the Incarnation without the Virgin Birth is like the Resurrection without the Empty Tomb. Without the Virgin Birth, the "incarnate" Christ becomes a Palestinian guru or social worker, not a Savior.

You Have To Grasp It....

a: Virgin birth ~
b: studying the trinity

What: "Studying the virgin birth is like studying the Trinity - you end up walking right up to the limits of your own feeble understanding. But it does seem that the angel of the Lord rests the sinlessness of Jesus the Christ on the foundation of His virgin birth: Luke 1:35 - "And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy-the Son of God. On The Other Hand.....down On Earth....

a: Virgin birth ~
b: horror movie

What: "The virgin birth, in which Mary supposedly conceived baby Jesus with no male partnership, is a baby fever fantasy. The virgin birth is like a horror movie to me. Some of my girlfriends over the years, the ones Taylor and I least expected to become mothers, were suddenly hit with baby fever, and bam. There they were, standing big-bellied beside the men they'd found to father their children. Better than virgin births, and such cute babies. "

It The Vessel That's The Issue....

a: Virgin birth ~
b: clay jug

What: "Our dogma may be symbolic and metaphorical, but its literal sense is indispensable to us as the vessel of the Mystery. The Virgin Birth is like a clay jug, in which the rarest of late-harvest wines is carried. Without the jug, we could never taste the wine. Likewise, the supernatural incomprehensibility of the Incarnation is contained in the Dogma of the Virgin Birth, so that we might in some way adore it."

It Shakes Up Your Assumptions......

a: Virgin birth ~
b: a lightning bolt

What: "The virgin birth is like a lightning bolt through a completely dark sky. It proclaims in an "ungetoverable" way WHO Jesus really is. The real Father of the "Holy Offspring" conceived in Mary's womb by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit is God. Jesus is the One and Only Begotten Natural Offspring of God Himself."

That Must Hurt......

a: Virgin birth ~
b: going through doors without opening them

What: "Damian makes some comparisons that make it clear that the restoration of virginity is a miracle within some present moment of time. Damian says that restoring virginity is a lesser miracle than the virgin birth. The virgin birth is like going through doors without opening them; the restoring of virginity is like closing doors that have been opened (611B-C). Damian further compares the virgin birth and the restoration of virginity to the eternal life of Enoch (Sirach 44:16; Hebrews 11:5) and the resurrection of Lazarus (John 11) (614C)."

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
