solenoid

n=4

a: Solenoid ~
b: a big relay

What: "The solenoid is like a big relay; when small current is fed to it from the ignition switch, there is an electro-magnet inside that activates and moves, closing the circuit for the big cables so the starter motor gets maximum power straight from the battery. Another function of the solenoid is to pull a lever that kicks the starter gear out, to meet the flywheel teeth, so the engine would turn over. It all haooens at the same time when you turn the key. While it's possible to replace just the solenoid, people usually replace the whole starter."

Linear Motion Vs Circular Motion

a: Solenoid ~
b: an electric engine

What: "A solenoid is like an electric engine except instead of spinning a shaft in the middle of the cylinder, it uses the magnetic field to move the shaft in and out. This is the device used on most power door locks."

a: The solenoid ~
b: a door bell

What: "When the power shuts off to the wire, the solenoid is like a door bell and a spring closes the fuel to the engine with a needle that goes into the pickup tube, thus starving the engine of fuel. I would venture a guess that the solenoid has an internal short."

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
