a: Silicon ~
b: big empty space

What:

Silicon Valley Economy

a: Silicon valley economy ~
b: A Mavericks Wave

What: Both come in sets, big sets. Both are known far and wide for their power. People flock from around the world to get in on the action. Both can brutally crash down on those who are not prepared for the ride. The trick is to know which wave to catch, how long to ride it and most importantly, knowing when to bail out so you don't get smashed on the rocks. So watch out, you don't want to be high tech equivalent of Mark Foo.

It's The New Golf

a: In silicon valley bicycling ~
b: golf

What: There was an article in the Mercery New, the local San Jose paper, about the popularity of cycling in this area. Many people do it; they do it in large groups and in small groups and some ride by themselves. Its a sporting/social activity that many can participate in depending on their desire and level of fitness. It's also a way to hang out in a environment were people can enjoy themselves outdoors with people they generally like and if the timing is right review potential business opportunities or build ones network. This is somewhat like the way gold was and still is, but not as many people play golf as cycle, at least in this area.

A Tale Of 2 Counties

a: Santa Clara County-Silicon Valley ~
b: A liberal version of Orange county

What: Both are wealthy. Both Transitioned from orchard cultures to modern suburbs very rapidly. Both are suburban in the worst way. Both are filled with status craving people who want the best of all. The people in Orange county happen to swing right, while many in Santa Clara happen to swing left. But take way the political veneer and you pretty much have the same people and the same culture. Even thought either place would be loath to admit the degree of commonality between the two. It is an example of the "narcissism of small differences"

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
