a: sculpture ~
b: fighting bulls

What:

"Pogue says that if he would have had the opportunity to choose the kind of art to make, it probably would have been painting. But, he says, "I had no choice, SCULPTURE chose me. I enjoy building things. Doing sculpture is like fighting bulls; it is a very arduous discipline which takes a lot of physical strength. Maybe this is what attracts me to the metal."

a: sculpture ~
b: violin

What:

" All this takes place in a gallery, not on a stage, yet each show is a performance, each show requires the discovery of a new pose. Maybe the sculpture is like a violin, and the pose is the sonata. It can take hours, finding the pose and lighting it."

Rigid 3-d Poetry

a: sculpture ~
b: a sonnet

What:

Sculptors smiled back-a dustier smile, of course. "Our art requires much greater discipline and skill because of the serious limitations of the medium. Sculpture is like a sonnet, with the rhyme, the meter, and the lines fixed. You painters don't have many limitations-you can depict anything: clouds, rainy days, things floating through the air."

a: sculpture ~
b: acupuncture needles

What:

"As far as Mr. Gormley is concerned, the project is also a way to get viewers thinking about the environment around them. Back in his studio he explained further: "You could almost say the insertion of the sculpture is like the insertion of acupuncture needles within a collective body. And seeing how the body as a whole reacts to the presence of this irritation is very much the point." "

a: sculpture ~
b: magent

What:

A piece of sculpture is like a magnet. Whenever somebody says, 'Can I touch it?' I say, "Absolutely, that's what it's all about."

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
