Smog Here And Smog There...

a: Santiago-chile ~
b: Mexico City

What: "Santiago is like Mexico City, surrounded by a ring of mountains that during the winter trap smog and dust under a thermal inversion layer. Although the city recently celebrated the lowest smog levels in 14 years and continues to fight smog-causing culprits, the city can get a little "unbreathable" from May to September if it hasn't rained or a big gust hasn't come along to blow it all out."

The Big Santiago?

a: Santiago-Chile ~
b: living in New York City

What: "Santiago is like living in New York City but with the climate of San Diego. It's beautiful. I can go skiing in the Andes on a Saturday morning and the next afternoon be surfing in the Pacific Ocean. It's an ultra modern city with great restaurants and cultural events. I even play soccer with my business colleagues. "

Weather Wise It Is

a: Santiago-Chile ~
b: Los Angeles

What: "It was cool and sunny when I was there in the fall, their spring, which I was told is the nicest time of year. Santiago is like Los Angeles: rainy in winter (our summer), quite hot in summer (our winter)."

Like Big American Cities

a: Santiago-chile ~
b: the majority of big cities in the States

What: "Santiago is a post-industrial city. It sprawls, it's dirty. It has a downtown area which is frantic during the weekday but dead on the weekends. There's are the posh areas, the trendy bohemian barrio of Bellavista where we live and then of course areas we are not supposed to go to as a general rule. In short, Santiago is like the majority of big cities in the States, except a lot more Spanish is spoken."

Public Transportation In Chile

a: Santiago-Chile ~
b: like its blood vessel

What: "The public transport of Santiago is like its blood vessel. More than 50% of the population relies on the Metro and buses to get to their work every day, get back home and get town at nights on the weekends. Actually the Metro here reminds me a lot of how a friend of mine described the metro in Tokyo to me."

Santiago Driving Like Nyc

a: Santiago-chile ~
b: driving in NYC during rush hour

What: "Driving in Santiago is like driving in NYC during rush hour all the time. It is definately not for the faint hearted. Once you are away from the city though, it is fine. It is definately worth renting though. That way, you can explore whenever you see somewhere you want to stop along the way."

London But Calmer

a: Santiago-chile ~
b: a chilled out London

What: Santiago is like a chilled out London. Less people and better laid out. Streets feel more spacious. There aren't as many cars. It's quieter. They spray cooling mist on the platforms of the metro (underground). In fact, Santiago feels like a modern European city (including its prices)

Santiago Smog Fest

a: Santiago-Chile ~
b: a population of blinded deer

What: Come smog, however, and Santiago is like a population of blinded deer stumbling about after the Bomb.Santiago hit pre-emergency levels again yesterday, and a photo in El Mercurio shows a thick bar of brown black smoke blocking out the view, not only of the Andes right next to the city, but of Cerro San Cristobal right in the center of town.Only its peak is visible"

Hmmmmm.

a: Santiago-Chile ~
b: Australia’s east-coast cities

What: "Santiago is like Australia's east-coast cities in a lot of ways - lots of people, shops, cars, noise and interesting diversions. I've read that it's the most introverted and non-touristy S American city, and I can only add to that rumour."

Smoggy Butthole City?

a: Santiago-chile ~
b: a giant grey butthole

What: "I hate Santiago, is like a giant grey butthole full of smog and angry people. Valparaiso is better, it has nice views from the hills to the sea and it's full of bars and pubs. Beer flows like rivers."

Santiago As Old Radio

a: Santiago-Chile ~
b: dusty, antique radio

What: "Santiago is like a dusty, antique radio which you could easily value for aesthetic purposes alone, its stone architecture blending easily with glass skyscrapers. But, when you plug it in you discover that it still works; that underneath its classic-albeit grimy-facade is a well functioning machine"

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
