plasma membrane
"The fluid mosaic model is a good representation of the plasma membrane because the membrane itself is very fluid by being flexible and letting the membrane to complete endocytosis and exocytosis. The plasma membrane is like a mosaic because it is made up of many channel proteins, gycoproteins and cholesterol that all work together."
Extrinsic proteins in plasma membranes are like a flotilla of boats because they can move relative to one another but usually only in one plane, some may have masts / flags for signalling like glycoproteins / receptors, the proteins are held in relation to phospholipids like boats in the water.
Salt in the water has a role in stability /density of the sea as does cholesterol and the interactions between phospholipid tails in the membrane.

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
