plasma

n=11

a: Plasma ~
b: a gas

What:

"Plasma is like a gas, but many of its atoms have been stripped of an electron or two. These positively charged atoms swim about in a crackling-hot sea of negatively charged loose electrons, making plasmas great electrical conductors. "

a: Plasma ~
b: a perfect conductor

What:

" A plasma is like a perfect conductor, in that it shields out static electric fields;the charges within the plasma rearrange themselves so that the E -field is zero except within approximately one Debye length of the edges of the plasma. De-bye shielding is effective only if there is no magnetic field in the plasma; in the presence of a B field the shielding is less complete, as we shall see "

a: Plasma cells ~
b: turret guns

What:

"Plasma cells are like the turret guns of the immune system that secrete thousands of antibodies per second."

a: Plasma cells ~
b: snipers

What:

"Plasma cells are like snipers, equipped to take out foreign invaders in the human body while keeping other cells in the body healthy."

a: Plasma cells ~
b: antibody factories

What:

"Plasma cells are like antibody factories, producing many copies of a single type of antibody."

a: Plasma B cells ~
b: sophisticated 3D printing xerox machines

What:

"- 1.Plasma B cells are like sophisticated 3D printing xerox machines... they have special genes and proteins that allow them to copy any foreign material transferred to them (most of the time its some protein that doesnt belong in your body). So they scan the foreign material, and print a specific "antibody" that matches the antigen. Once these antibodies are built, they can be released into your blood or lymphatic system or tissues in order to help defend your body. This would be considered as the initial (primary) step. "

a: plasma membrane ~
b: mosaic

What:

"The fluid mosaic model is a good representation of the plasma membrane because the membrane itself is very fluid by being flexible and letting the membrane to complete endocytosis and exocytosis. The plasma membrane is like a mosaic because it is made up of many channel proteins, gycoproteins and cholesterol that all work together."

Plasma Membrane

a: Plasma membrane ~
b: flotilla of boats on the sea

What:

Extrinsic proteins in plasma membranes are like a flotilla of boats because they can move relative to one another but usually only in one plane, some may have masts / flags for signalling like glycoproteins / receptors, the proteins are held in relation to phospholipids like boats in the water.
Salt in the water has a role in stability /density of the sea as does cholesterol and the interactions between phospholipid tails in the membrane.

A Sea Of Floating Proteins......

a: The plasma membrane ~
b: a sea in which other molecules can float

What: The sea reference is good. Or maybe a bay reference. Maybe a harbor filled with boats both small and large.

a: Studying plasma waves ~
b: finding one tooth of a dinosaur

What:

"Studying plasma waves in space is like finding one tooth of a dinosaur and trying to determine what the whole dinosaur looked like," Gekelman said. "In our machine, we can see the whole dinosaur.

a: The rogue plasma cells ~
b: trillions of Pac-men

What:

"Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the body's plasma cells. Healthy plasma cells are found in bone marrow and are key to a functioning immune system. Plasma cells work by making antibodies that protect the body from bacteria, viruses and fungi. But when plasma cells are cancerous, they make many cells just like themselves and cause damage to the body. The result is a weakening of the immune system as well as a slow destruction of the skeleton. The rogue plasma cells are like trillions of Pac-men chomping on the body's bones."

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
