Pittsburgh As Covered Furniture
a: Pittsburgh ~
b: good furniture covered in plastic
What: "Pittsburgh is like that expensive furniture at your grandmother's house that she keeps covered with that sticky plastic. It looks really nice these days, but you always end up leaving feeling uncomfortable and wonder who it's being saved for."

The Sibling City
a: Pittsburgh ~
b: my little brother
What: "I always say that Pittsburgh is like my little brother; it's ok for ME to make fun of certain things (I'm looking at you, yinzers) but outsiders? No way."

Pittsburgh As Breughel Painting
a: Pittsburgh ~
b: Breughel painting
What: My Pittsburgh is like a Breughel painting: everyone is making something, or everything has been made - a fire, bread, tiny skates, the windows of narrow houses, the delicate spires of churches. We hope that the articles collected here capture images of LaGuardia as a community of makers, demonstrations of what we do and make as learners and teachers, whether as writers of poems or essays, nurses on clinical rounds, housekeepers at the Sheraton Hotel, or composition teachers assigned five courses a semester. Your labor is represented here, too. We hope you find the issue worthwhile, and welcome your comments.

Pittsburgh As Self Absorbed
a: Pittsburgh ~
b: an irritating date
What: "Pittsburgh is like the irritating date who only talks about themselves. My guess is Pittsburgh Foundations and other large funders are behind some of this extreme introversion. They are not doing any serious Pittsburgh artist any favors."

Curvy Streets
a: Pittsburgh ~
b: a bunch of spaghetti dropped on hills
What: "Putting streets on a grid is super awesome. Utah has the streets on a numeric grid, which makes everything perfectly easy. Albuquerque has named streets, but still on a north-south, east-west grid - still pretty east. Pittsburgh is like a bunch of spaghetti dropped on a bunch of hills. It is super easy to get turned around and not know what direction is which or where we are going."

Pittsburgh As Cincinnati
a: Pittsburgh ~
b: Cincinnati
What: "Pittsburgh is like Cincinnati. There are a lot of people with German heritage and a lot of people who like to drink beer," Haas said. "Plus, it's a great town."

Pittsburgh As Kindergarten
a: Pittsburgh ~
b: the kindergarten teacher you can still remember
What: "but after reading "Cracking the Dress Code in L.A., New York" (Personal Journal, June 14) and stepping out to lunch, I realize that Pittsburgh is like the kindergarten teacher you can still remember. She loves the child clad in Oilily just as much as the Route 66 babe. In Pittsburgh it's not about the Chanel suit"

The Fort City
a: Pittsburgh ~
b: a big fort
What: "Pittsburgh is like a big fort. Geographically it's bound
by a highway which goes all around the city. So before you
get to Pittsburgh you can't see it. Usually you can see a city
five or ten minutes before you arrive--but not here. It's very
separating."

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
