Proteins are linear polymers of amino acids that fold into a 3 dimension entity. The process is complicated and needs guidance to form a functioning protein, thus the need for molecular chaperones. But the analogy would be better if you thought of it as a long narrow piece of paper(a ribbon?) that need to be arranged. The the long skinny structure of a ribbon is analogous to the structure of an amino acid polymer.
