b: russian doll

What:

a: small intestine ~
b: a second brain

What:

" In many ways, the small intestine is like a second brain. Ninety-five percent of your serotonin -- the brain's mood-regulating chemical -- is contained in your small intestine's elaborate network of nerves. That's a big reason why we feel strong emotions like fear, anticipation, and love deep in our guts as well as our minds. "

a: small intestine ~
b: a shag carpet

What:

"I like to imagine that a healthy small intestine is like a shag carpet, and small intestine affected by active celiac sprue is more like a tile floor. Celiac sprue is not a gluten allergy, but rather an autoimmune condition where the gluten is triggering an inflammatory response in the body. "

a: small intestine ~
b: a huge blind spot

What:

"The small intestine is like a huge blind spot in the human anatomy. There really aren't any great ways to see inside it, and despite it's name it is quite big. The fact that I've had advanced cancer there is going to make any doctor uneasy, because there's not a great standard of care when it comes to surveillance, and small intestine cancer is quite deadly. So, we're taking the hands on approach and cutting my guts open any time we have a reason to. Yay me. "

Small cap biotech investing

a: Investing in a Small Cap Biotech ~
b: Playing roulette with a rigged wheel

What: This Seattle Times story is a great piece of investigative journalism. The story was written in 2005 and is probably relevant today. The fact that Hedge Funds have paid doctors to discuss their work is something anyone contemplating this type of investment should consider. According to the story, which is very credible, hedge funds have paid doctors to discuss the results of the drug they are working on. These exclusive investors got info, before the company, before the regulatory agencies and before retail investors. As noted, these small biotech usually have 1 drug in the clinic, so information on that drug can significantly move the stock price up or down. These types of exchanges are totally slimy, typically violate NDAs and put individual investors at a severe disadvantage.

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
