Pushing The Limits Of An Analogy

a: Lymphocyte ~
b: Wizard

What: "Lymphocytes are like Wizards. They Show Up Late to Save the Day with the Estranged Son of the Possessed Horse Lords. This Analogy May Have Gotten Away From Me."

La La La La

a: Lymphocyte ~
b: cellular butterfly

What: "Lymphocytes are like cellular butterflies in the human circulatory system: they flutter about freely in the currents. And if lymphocytes are butterflies, Liviu Nicu is an avid collector."

Many Connections They Have

a: Lymphocyte ~
b: traveling neuron

What: "The immune system is understood more and more as a second brain, Lymphocytes are like traveling neurons, they are linked not by synapses, but by binding proteins which help to recognize each other. Nerves are effective because they are connected at the end to muscles, in the same way, the immune system is effective because at the end of the chain, it has the group of B-cells which can act directly by liberating antibodies which will smother and suffocate the bacteria and finally destroy them. Besides, the brain develops a feeling of identity in the same way, the immune system has a very accurate individuality, hence the rejection of the transplants."

Marking A Target.....

a: B lymphocyte ~
b: explosive dye packs

What: "B lymphocytes are like those brightly colored explosive dye packs that bank tellers carefully tuck into stacks of bills handed over to unwary bank robbers. Once the dye pack is out of the bank's walls it gets activated. Then it explodes and covers the rest of the stolen bills in the sack with a telltale fluorescent dye." The link is a very clear discussion of how the immune system works.

They Fly The Cellular Plane....

a: T4 lymphocyte ~
b: a pilot of immunity

What: The T4 lymphocytes are like the "pilots" of immunity. The T4 cells also govern the quality and quantity of the B-lymphocytes. Thus, with progression of the infection over the years, the patient has defective cell mediated immunity and lymphokine mediated humoral immunity. This is responsible for the increased incidence of opportunistic infections as the patient's immune system deteriorates.

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
