What: A compressed spring has a high level of potential energy. It's like the ball on top of a hill, it has the capacity to release it's energy and do some work. This idea is transferable to chemistry and chemical bonds. Some covalent bonds have the capacity to hydrolyze and release their energy to help build, as in the case of a cell, macromolecular structures. Some examples include: the phosphoanhydride bond in ATP, the thioester bond in acetyl CoA and other phosphate ester bonds. A molecule that acts like a tightly coiled spring it is.
