government

n=16

a: government ~
b: the market

What:

"For this school of thought, the government is like the market, with politicians responsive to voters for the same reason that businesses are responsive to consumers. Voters, like consumers, are kings. There is no room for any notion of concentrated power in any model based on free-market economic theory."

a: US government ~
b: Bank of Planet Earth

What:

"So the national debt isn't really like a credit card, it's more like a savings account, and the US government is the Bank of Planet Earth. The US government pays interest on your savings with them, with the understanding that they can use your money for whatever they want, as long as they pay back on time."

A nice discussion of US government debt.

Common Trust?

a: bad government ~
b: bad driving

What:

"And this kind of makes sense too, as roads are almost a perfect microcosm of what states do on a larger scale. On a road network, you have many different actors all behaving in a self-interested manner, trying to reach their own goals and in order to manage this efficiently, there are rules in place to try to try and make the whole thing more efficient. If, for some reason, people decide not to follow these rules, then the whole thing breaks down and the result is chaos."

The Us Washington Elites.......

a: Us government 2013 ~
b: Maoist gerontocracy

What: It is indeed. Look at the US government, or maybe the 2 political parties that hold the most power, currently . A duopoly that spends much of it's time currying favor and power with the money powers so they can get more money and power so they can get even more money and power and favor. It's 2 factions fighting to control the levers of power in Washington DC. The powerful people in both parties are in their early 70's. They have been around a long time. That how you get to the top of the heap. It has the flavor of a Maoist gerontocracy. What is characteristic of this form of government? Check back for more later.....

Regulatory Obesity?

a: Government Regulation ~
b: Code bloat

What:

"Bad regulation sucks. Over regulation sucks. No regulation sucks too. Regulation is like code. Code bloat is bad but the solution is not "no code." The solution isn't "throw it all out and start again" either. The solution is iterative improvement based on real world feedback and improved transparency. "

Causing More Problems Than They Solve

a: Government bureaucracy ~
b: a leaky dam built directly over a town

What: "A government bureaucracy is like a leaky dam built directly over a town. It mostly fixes the problem while at the same time causing another new set of problems. All the while no one can threaten to get rid of the bureaucracy because the town would be flooded."

An Animal That Start Small And Gets Big....

a: Government bureaucracy ~
b: inviting a baby elephant

What: "Love is the greatest power in the universe. Think of the parent-child bond, or the teacher-student bond. Government agencies cannot love like this, though they are charged to do things that only love can do. That starting a government bureaucracy is like inviting a baby elephant to live in your family's log cabin."

a: Government bureaucracy ~
b: gun

What: Government bureaucracies, like guns, are merely objects.Guns don't kill people, and bureaucracies aren't corrupt. People kill people, and people are corrupt.

Power Games All Over

a: Government bureaucracy ~
b: dealing with your spouse

What: "I think that dealing with government bureaucracies is like dealing with your spouse. It's easier to tiptoe into bed at 3 am after a night out with the boys then it is to turn on the lights and argue with her about your right to go out with your buddies. After 21 years with my wife I have learned that a little creativity and imagination goes a lot further towards me advancing my cause then does a head to head battle. I think the same logic works here. Just my 2 cents."

Government As Mother In Law

a: Government bureaucracy ~
b: pesky mother-in-law

What: "But once the Jew ties the knot with Israel by making aliyah, the honeymoon quickly fades and the reality of married Israeli life kicks in. For non-Hebrew speakers there are communication barriers; the government bureaucracy is like a pesky mother-in-law who kills the romance with endless, prying demands; it's hard to go out on dates when bogged down by financial worries because the oleh has trouble finding a good job."

It's All About The Money

a: Government bureaucracy ~
b: combination of organized crime

What: "Government bureaucracy is like some sick combination of organized crime and a blindfolded, frantic six-year-old swinging at a pinata. They get their taste, even if they have to kill you for it - or, in working for their end, they are going to remorselessly trash a ton of shit. Even a child's vegetable stand."

A Beast That Grows New Heads

a: Government bureaucracy ~
b: a hydra

What: "I think we can agree that government bureaucracy is like a Hydra... cut off one head and two more grow in it's place with all the same attributes... I dislike some things in the county government, and I document them, then address them... usually they get worked.. sometimes it takes two visits.."

A Fish That Grows And Drinks All The Water

a: Government bureaucracy ~
b: a goldfish

What: "Government bureaucracy is like a goldfish. If you put a little goldfish into a big fish tank, it will eventually grow to the size of that tank. Increasing the size of that fish tank, called Town Hall, will give the government goldfish more room to grow. Bureaucracies will always justify their existence and their need for more. They are not accountable to the taxpayers. So long as they don't screw up big time, or use town credit cards for escorts, their jobs are pretty much safe."

It Doesn't Want To Go To Bed.....

a: Government gerontocracy ~
b: little child

What: "Government gerontocracy is like a little child, it will do all sorts of things on the way to the bedroom to prolong the eventual fate: the kid will go to sleep, no matter how many stops on the way. So it is with government, the path is towards more open, collaborative and efficient government, but all this loss of control is making people there so anxious that on the way to openness they will cling to whatever remnants of control they think they can still cling to."

a: government and the media ~
b: marriage

What:

"The government really needs to get its message out to the American people, and it knows that the best way to do that is by using the American news media," said Shanker. "The relationship between the government and the media is like a marriage; it is a dysfunctional marriage to be sure, but we stay together for the kids."

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
