a: Golgi body ~
b: gift wrapping shop

What:

"While layers of the golgi may look like the endoplasmic reticulum, they have a very different job. The
golgi body is a series of tubes that package material for transport around the cell. So the golgi body is like a gift wrapping shop for protein."

a: Golgi body ~
b: a post office

What: "The Golgi apparatus, also known as the Golgi body, is like a post office. It receives things and sends them off to different places. I've broken it up into four steps:"...See the step in the link.

a: The golgi body ~
b: a port or a harbor

What: The link is a paper on using metaphor in teaching.
The Title"METAPHOR AND CREATIVITY IN LEARNING SCIENCE"
The Abstract:"While much work has examined how students think and and learn with metaphors, relatively little research has focused on thinking about metaphors, that is, thinking critically about current metaphors and considering creative alternatives. This paper presents results from a classroom based study that involves metaphor in science learning and incorporates a novel computational technique for analyzing metaphors in text. The results here show that students' ability to engage with a metaphor's deep, structural aspects significantly predicts ability to generate creative, novel metaphors. Not only do these results carry implications for how best to incorporate metaphor into instruction, but they also draw attention to the ability to reason critically about metaphors as an important area for future research."

a: The golgi body ~
b: the shipping department

What: "The golgi body is like the shipping department of the cell because it modifies, packages, and ships proteins and lipids received from the ER to locations inside and outside of the cell. The golgi is made of a stack of pancake like membranes which prepare and then ship the proteins and lipids."

a: Golgi apparatus ~
b: post office

What: "In a way the golgi apparatus is like the post office because they have to sort of the packages that were given to them by the people (or in the cell's case the ER). After recieving the packages, they have to rearrange them and make sure that the letters get to their appropiate address or destination."

The Final Touch?

a: Golgi apparatus ~
b: seniors and teacher in high school

What: "The Golgi Apparatus is like the seniors and the teachers of a high school." Another association from another time would be finishing school.

a: Golgi apparatus ~
b: a commercial hub

What: "Just as the endoplasmic reticulum is the workshop of the cell the Golgi apparatus is like a commercial hub which acts both as a sorting, packaging, shipping and receiving area with a little manufacture on the side."

a: Golgi apparatus ~
b: sugar coating factory for proteins

What: Yes, it's like a postal hub that routes proteins to the outside of the cell. How does the routing occur? Within the Golgi, proteins made by the cell are glycosylated; sugars are added to them. They become glycoproteins. These sugars bond to and therefore label these proteins. They have been given a sugar-tag with specific instructions. What does the sugar-tag say to the cell? In many cases the message is " secrete me".

Baggage Tags

a: Golgi apparatus ~
b: a room to add baggage tags

What: The Golgi labels protein with sugars so that the cell knows where to transport them. The process is similar to the airport destination tags put on luggage when flying. Luggage is labeled with a code that tells which airport it's supposed to go to. As it moves through the system, the baggage handlers, both men and machines, then know how to route a piece of baggage so that it arrives at its proper destination.

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
