Many Many Many Things Going On...

a: Genomics ~
b: garden

What: "If genomics is like a garden, genetics is like a single plant. If the plant isn't flowering, you could study the plant itself (genetics) or look at the surroundings to see if it is too crowded or shady (genomics) - both approaches are probably needed to find out how to make your plant blossom."

A Genomic

a: Genomics ~
b: the reunion of an extended family

What: "If genomics is like an extended family, genetics is like one family member. A girl can study her romantic partner in detail and thinks she knows all the quirks - but she may have her eyes opened even more after seeing her partner behave at a family reunion."

A Gene And It Surroundings.....

a: Genomics ~
b: molecular biology gone post-modern

What: "Another student noted, "Genomics is like molecular biology gone post-modern. You learn that you have to study genes and their proteins in context, because context has such an effect on their behavior."

Stopping A Cancer Storm.....

a: Genomics ~
b: understanding of architectural blueprint

What: "Your assumptions for things to cure diseases are a little far fetched. An understanding of genomics is like an understanding of architectural blueprints. It doesn't mean your house is hurricane proof."

Too Much Information....

a: Genomics ~
b: astronomy

What: "Sydney closed his talk by making a fun analogy where genomics is like astronomy and thus should have been called "genomy." He supported his analogy by noting that astronomy has astro physic and genomics has genetics. Both are quantitative and measure history and evolution. Astronomy also has astrology, the prediction of an individual's future from the stars. Similarly, folks would like to predict an individual's future from their genes and suggested we call this work "Genology," since it has the same kind of scientific foundation as astrology."

a: Genomics ~
b: the Rosetta stone

What: "Comparative genomics is like the Rosetta stone. You see these ancient texts, and you know they must mean something, but how do you know what they mean? "

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
