Enzyme As Flask.....

a: Enzyme ~
b: highly specialized reaction flask

What: "Meanwhile, cells make all kinds of things happen by keeping the reactants around in very low concentration (or trickily compartmentalized, a factor not to be ignored), and then sticking them together with other reactants inside the active site of an enzyme. The middle of an enzyme is like a reaction flask that's just big enough for the two molecules, and all sorts of unlikely chemistry happens under those conditions, things that you just can't get away with in bulk solutions."

Reaction With No Enzyme......

a: Enzyme ~
b: a drive over a mountain

What: "A chemical reaction without an enzyme is like a drive over a mountain. The enzyme bores a tunnel through it so that passage is far quicker and takes much less energy."

Hmmmmm.....does This Make Sense.....

a: Enzyme ~
b: chemical crowbar

What: "An enzyme is like a chemical crowbar" in that it "breaks down other chemical compounds." A crowbar helps push things using leverage. An enzyme is a surface in which molecules are changed because of a lowering of activation energy for a particular reaction. So a crowbar and an enzyme alter the amount of energy need to get something done. One is mechanical the other chemical.

An Induced Fit

a: Enzyme ~
b: woolen glove

What: "the enzyme is like a woolen glove which can be wrapped around the hand and just as it(woolen glove) adjust itself to wrap the hand, so does the enzyme." The substrate binds with an enzyme, which can change the shape of that enzyme which helps activated that enzyme. p. 69 in the linked text...

a: enzyme ~
b: a Philips head screwdriver

What:

"A useful analogy is that an enzyme is like a Philips head screwdriver. A Philips head screwdriver can catalyze the reaction of driving a screw into wood many times over without getting used up."

An Essential Part......

a: Coenzyme ~
b: part of a car

What: "By analogy, a coenzyme is like a part of a car, such as a tire, which can be identified in and of itself and which can, furthermore, be removed from the car. The car (enzyme), however, must of necessity have the tire in order to carry out its prescribed function. "

Ouch....

a: Coenzyme ~
b: wing man

What: "while studying for e bio cuz I'm remembering that a coenzyme is like a wing man and a competitive inhibitor is a cock block"

a: Enzyme substrate ~
b: lock and key

What: This is a common association that explains the relationship between an enzyme and its respective substrate. But, if the substrate is like a key, then, typically, it is a very loose key. Many enzymes can bind with molecules that are not their primary or intended substrate. The turnover of reactant to products, in this situation, is much slower than the natural substrate.

a: enzyme inhibitor ~
b: soft ball in a base ball glove

What:

Think of a enzyme as a glove and its substrate as a baseball. They are made for each other. One captures the other. Now think about a baseball glove with a large softball in it. The glove can no longer effectively capture the baseball because there is another ball blocking the pocket. It much more complicated than this, but the essence is something is blocking something else.

a: enzyme regulation ~
b: dimmer switch

What:

"Under normal circumstances, it acts by causing a conformational change in a receptor molecule, which results in a change in the binding affinity of the ligand. In this way, an allosteric ligand modulates the receptor's activation by its primary (orthosteric) ligand, and can be thought to act like a dimmer switch in an electrical circuit, adjusting the intensity of the response."

There 2 Sides With Lots Of Movement....

a: Enzyme biochemistry ~
b: football

What: "let's say that enzyme biochemistry is like football. You can represent an enzyme's reaction mechanism with diagrams that resemble the Xs and Os of a football play. For both football and enzymes, there's a series of steps that have to happen for things to work. A ball carrier has to get the handoff just in time to hit the hole, for instance, and the hole has to open when he gets there."

a: protein-enzyme denaturation ~
b: bending the key

What:

"An enzyme and its substrate are traditionally compared to a lock and key, so protein/enzyme denaturation is like bending the key: It stops working."

A whole book of essential analogies it is.

a: inactive enzyme in a biochemical pathway ~
b: dam across a stream

What:

"Having an inactive enzyme in a biochemical pathway is like putting a dam across a stream: you get build-up of molecules upstream of the defective enzyme"

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
