Sewing So Small
a: Dna ligase ~
b: molecular stitcher
What: "Ligase is like a molecular stitcher. .... If there is break in a double stranded DNA, they ligate the broken ends by phosphodiester bond formation between the broken ends" by someone at Davidson College.

Molecular Sewing Machines........
a: Dna ligase ~
b: a sewing machine
What: DNA ligase is an enzyme. Enzymes, biological catalysts, generally perform 2 functions. They provide an ideal spatial orientation for 2 or more molecules to react. Once said molecules are aligned correctly, the enzyme reversibly interacts with the molecules to lower the transition energy for that particular reaction.
So, a valid association for DNA ligase is a sewing machine. A sewing machine can do 2 things; it can provide a surface for cloth to be aligned correctly, and it provides the means for the 2 separate piece of cloth to bound. The means of connection is the needle and the thread. A sewing machine is not changed by this process. It can perform the same task many many times.

Putting The Pieces Together
a: Dna ligase ~
b: needle and thread
What: "The ligase is like a needle and thread. It is responsible for binding the plasmid and gene sticky ends together."

Contrast With A Wrong Association
a: Dna ligase ~
b: glue
What: As noted in the link, the association with DNA ligase to glue is weak and close to inaccurate. Ligase, itself does not add anything to the ligation reaction. It expedites it, participates in it, but it is not a reactant. This is a basic property of any catalyst, biological or other. "Ligation", the whole process, could be associated with "gluing" a 5-prime to a 3-prime end. But these associations should differentiate between the general process and the particular molecules and involved.

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
