a: Diffusion ~
b: the doors opening on Black Friday

What: "Diffusion is like the doors opening on Black Friday and the crowd rushes in the store." There are many more in the linked page.

a: Diffusion ~
b: osmosis

What:

"Diffusion is like osmosis (covered on our other web page) and it is the tendency of molecules to move from areas low concentration to areas of higher concentration. For example if there is a concentrated amount of a perfume released into an air filled room the perfume will slowly diffuse until equilibrium occurs."

Energy Opposites:

a: Diffusion ~
b: coasting your bike down a hill

What: "If diffusion is like coasting your bike down a hill, then active transport is like using energy to pedal your bike up a hill. Cells need large amounts of glucose to be used as energy. The cells need to move the glucose from an area of low concentration (outside the cell) to an area of high concentration (inside the cytoplasm). This is the opposite of diffusion. This controlled movement (active transport) of glucose through the cell membrane take energy and is controlled by proteins embedded in the membrane. The proteins are called carrier proteins. The carrier proteins act like the guards in front of the castle gates -- they only allow certain things through the gate."

a: Diffusion ~
b: fleas hopping

What:

"statistical mechanics diffusion theory - diffusion is like fleas hopping and electrodiffusion is like fleas hopping in a breeze. Thus, fleas that were hopping in a ... " The link is an academic paper on membrane transport.

a: Diffusion ~
b: a random walk

What:

"Simple diffusion is like a random walk, Banavar explains. In such a walk, the direction of each successive step is governed by chance. If a crowd of random walkers starts from the same point, the pattern of dispersal of the crowd is predictable. At first, the walkers cluster relatively near the starting point, with only a few farther away. As time goes on, this bell-curve distribution becomes flatter and flatter until the crowd of walkers is evenly dispersed from the starting point, like the dye in the water bucket."

a: Diffusion ~
b: Running a Race

What:

"Consider 10 runners who were so closely matched that they had essentially equal times for running a 1000 metre race. Now suppose half of the runners were required to carry an extra 10 kg mass that was attached to them by a belt or backpack. Likely the 5 who had to carry the extra mass would now lag behind the rest of the runners."

a: Diffusion ~
b: tree branches

What:

"Diffusion is the concept from experimental science. Molecules will move cross cell membranes, form high concentration to a low concentration. To me, diffusion is like tree branches. The starting point is the root. And it distributes the nutrition to the branches, and then sub-branches, finally reach to the tip. "

a: diffusion of responsibility ~
b: General Motor Managment

What:

In a big organization, no one is responsible and few if any are accountable. This is also applicable to our Federal Government, most obviously, The US Congress where to one is really responsible for anything.....

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
