The Cancer Cell Foot Brake

a: Cancer cell ~
b: a car with defective foot brakes

What: "In another world cancer cells are like cars with defective foot brakes (G1 checkpoint) and they need to rely on the emergency/parking brake (G2 checkpoint) to take curves or drive above bumps." This is a good comparison. It relates the mechanistic failures of a cancer cell to something that is generally understood by most; failing brakes. Cells have the capacity to grow as cars have the capacity to move. Mammalian cells also have the capacity to shut themselves down as car have the capacity to stop. But as noted, a aberrant chemical pathway in a cancer cell will make it unable to stop producing the way worn out break pads diminish a car's capacity to slow down and stop

Cancer Cells As Broken

a: Cancer cell ~
b: computer with broken keyboard

What: "Cancer cells are like a crashed computer with a partially or totally dead keyboard. They don't respond properly to external command signals. They execute an infinite loop set of instructions that drive the cell to permanent division." This is a really good comparison. I wonder who made this up?

Cancer Cell Is Shedding Snake Skin

a: Cancer cell ~
b: Shedding snake

What: "Like snakes, tumour cells shed their skin. Cancer is not a static disease but during its development the disease accumulates changes to evade natural defences adapting to new environmental circumstances, protecting against chemotherapy and radiotherapy and invading neighbouring organs, eventually causing metastasis."

The Face Of Cancer

a: Cancer cell ~
b: Human Face

What: Human faces have tremendous variability. This variability is genetic variability. As everyone knows, some people have blue eyes, white skin and square cheeks. The same genetic dynamic occurs with cancer cells, which are a part of the human body controlled by the genetic composition of that person. One of the reasons that cancer drugs work so poorly is that they don't account for the genetic profile of the individual patient. In a fashion, drug development consists of "training" molecules recognize cancer cell. Because of variability between the cell line used to develop the drug and the cancers cells in the patients, the drugs have a tendency, not recognize the cancer and get lost in the body.

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
