Cancer Drugs

a: Cancer ~
b: Manhattan traffic

What: "In an attempt to illustrate just how hard it is to treat cancer, New York Times biotech scribe Andrew Pollack turns to an analogy that most of his hometown readers can relate to instantly. There are so many aberrant molecules in a tumor, he writes, that blocking just one or two is like trying to stop all traffic in Manhattan with a roadblock at a single intersection."

Cancer Cable?

a: Cancer ~
b: cable television

What: "Incoming American Society of Oncology (ASCO) President George Sledge, MD was quoted at the 2010 annual ASCO meeting saying that "cancer is like cable television. Thirty years ago you had three channels. Now you have 500." It's an interesting--and accurate--analogy. We now know that cancer is not a single disease but rather a collection of many types of the disease."

Cancer Is Like A Weed In The Body

a: Cancer ~
b: a weed in the body

What: "Cancer is like a weed in the body. It flourishes when its environment is right for it. Doctors have tools such as chemotherapy for killing the weed. The real trick to beating cancer and staying cancer free is to create a healthy body environment."

the multiheaded monster

a: cancer ~
b: being attacked by a multi-headed monster

What: "Scientists now know that getting cancer is like being attacked by a multi-headed monster: How can you really be sure which part did the most damage?"

Cancer Is Like A Fungus

a: Cancer ~
b: a fungus

What: "The healing capacity of your body and your mind set is the star of this show, and the stage is the gut area, liver, intestines and stomach, no matter were a cancer exist in the body.Cancer is like a fungus, and hides in "dark" places ... your body will know were it lurks but is doing an all inclusive "clean up disc" maneuver"

The Big Cancer Dog?

a: Cancer ~
b: a big dog chasing you on the bike

What: "Cancer is like a big dog chasing you on the bike. Just keep pedaling, and the sorry son of a bitch will get tired of fighting and go away!"

Cancer Is Like A Battle With Self

a: Cancer ~
b: a battle with self

What: "Cancer is like a battle with self. Cells, which are the building blocks of the body are of different types and are capable of regeneration to replace the worn out ones. But at times because of varied reasons, cells start growing continuously without any halt even when there is no such need."

Cancer Is Like War?

a: Cancer ~
b: war

What: "Perhaps fighting cancer is like the Vietnamese war? I have maintained that treating cancer based on the concept of war would never succeed! If doctors wage an unending war within the body - what do you think happens to the battleground (your body!)? Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy etc. are advanced, mighty "fire power." Cancer cells are just tiny enemies floating and circulating around in the blood stream that later attach themselves to certain tissues of the body. Can these awesome treatments destroy all cancerous cells yet at the same time not destroy the host i.e., you and your living systems? Are we healing the sick body or are we creating more Vietnam, Hiroshima and Iraq?"

a: cancer ~
b: war

What:

The link is a class that discusses the whole idea of associating cancer and war. It's quite lengthy. If you like this kinda stuff, take a look.

From the discussion:

"In our culture, the military metaphor has dominated the way in which we think, and talk, about cancer. This paper discusses the use of metaphor, particularly the influence that the military metaphor has had on cancer medicine."

The Cancer Cell Foot Brake

a: Cancer cell ~
b: a car with defective foot brakes

What: "In another world cancer cells are like cars with defective foot brakes (G1 checkpoint) and they need to rely on the emergency/parking brake (G2 checkpoint) to take curves or drive above bumps." This is a good comparison. It relates the mechanistic failures of a cancer cell to something that is generally understood by most; failing brakes. Cells have the capacity to grow as cars have the capacity to move. Mammalian cells also have the capacity to shut themselves down as car have the capacity to stop. But as noted, a aberrant chemical pathway in a cancer cell will make it unable to stop producing the way worn out break pads diminish a car's capacity to slow down and stop

Cancer Cells As Broken

a: Cancer cell ~
b: computer with broken keyboard

What: "Cancer cells are like a crashed computer with a partially or totally dead keyboard. They don't respond properly to external command signals. They execute an infinite loop set of instructions that drive the cell to permanent division." This is a really good comparison. I wonder who made this up?

Cancer Cell Is Shedding Snake Skin

a: Cancer cell ~
b: Shedding snake

What: "Like snakes, tumour cells shed their skin. Cancer is not a static disease but during its development the disease accumulates changes to evade natural defences adapting to new environmental circumstances, protecting against chemotherapy and radiotherapy and invading neighbouring organs, eventually causing metastasis."

The Face Of Cancer

a: Cancer cell ~
b: Human Face

What: Human faces have tremendous variability. This variability is genetic variability. As everyone knows, some people have blue eyes, white skin and square cheeks. The same genetic dynamic occurs with cancer cells, which are a part of the human body controlled by the genetic composition of that person. One of the reasons that cancer drugs work so poorly is that they don't account for the genetic profile of the individual patient. In a fashion, drug development consists of "training" molecules recognize cancer cell. Because of variability between the cell line used to develop the drug and the cancers cells in the patients, the drugs have a tendency, not recognize the cancer and get lost in the body.

a: Cancer research ~
b: an ocean

What:

"Cancer research is like an ocean, you add a new drop and nothing will happen. But sometimes the discovery is so fundamental that it opens up a whole new idea, a whole new concept in the field and I think this paper belongs to that category,"

As Is Most Science...

a: cancer research ~
b: a pointillism picture

What:

"I feel that cancer research is like a pointillism picture where every single dot is a piece of important knowledge.Initially, you may not know what the dots represent, butas the dots increase and the colours begin to definethemselves, a shape takes place and you realize what thewhole picture is. I like to think of cancer as a canvas, andI believe that this canvas is now 80% full."

War And Cancer Associations

a: Anti-cancer nanoparticle ~
b: smart bomb

What: "This anti-cancer nanoparticle is like a smart bomb that delivers its multiple warhead genetic payload into endothelial cells that proliferate during angiogenesis-which is the medical equivalent of cutting off all the supply routes to destroy the tumor. Once angiogenesis is stopped, the tumor cells starve, and the tumor is ultimately destroyed."

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
