Bumpy Broom Stick

a: Camshaft ~
b: a broomstick that has been cut

What: "See, the camshaft is like a broomstick that has been cut into pieces and glued back together with the pieces slightly ajar of each other so as to make the broomstick "bumpy." Then as the whole stick rotates around the long axis, the bumps come around and push the valves down into the combustion chamber. This opens a passageway for air/fuel and exhaust to go in and out of the combustion chamber. Typical camshafts only have a certain, fixed amount of bumps. Ferrari's camshaft design has two, maybe three times as many bumps."

Takes Up Room; But It Does A Lot Of Work

a: Camshaft ~
b: an annoying brother-in-law

What: "A car's camshaft is like an annoying brother-in-law who moves in, eats your food, asks for loans and takes over your spare room. Problem is, he's the only one who knows how to open the windows or use the stove, so your helpless ass is pretty much stuck with him." A discussion of engines without camshafts; they are someone like diesel engines."

Multiple Sticks

a: Camshaft ~
b: using a stick to press down all the keys of the piano

What: "He gives us a great analogy where he describes how a normal engine using a camshaft is like using a stick to press down all the keys of the piano at one time, whereas the free valve concept involving actuators allows a better control of the valves and is described like being able to press each individual piano key at a different time to one another."

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
