bulimia

a: Bulimia ~
b: losing a friend

What: "There I learned how to eat proper meals, deal with my urges, my hurt and letting go of bulimia. Losing bulimia is like losing a friend you thought always had your best interests at heart but in reality didnt. I was completely taken of guard of everything my bulimia had caused me. "

a: bulimia ~
b: an abusive relationship

What:

" I thought I needed my eating disorder to deal with my painful things in life. I thought it helped relieve my stress and frustration. In reality, it only made all those things a million times worse. Bulimia is like an abusive relationship. It takes and never gives, but you feel like you need it. But you don't deserve it. You deserve recovery. You deserve to live your life in freedom and without the guilt and shame of an eating disorder. I'm glad you found this site, as I had tried many other recovery methods too and I was afraid that nothing would work. "

a: bulimia ~
b: being possessed

What:

"I know this is dramatic, but having bulimia is like being possessed, because it's something you're obsessed about and think about it all the time. But when you realize what you're doing, you can't control yourself."

a: Bulimia ~
b: thick fog

What: "Personally I have used metaphors such as that bulimia is like a thick fog making a person invisible. It can also be compared to a parasite who knows how to exploit its host, a tyrant but also a friend in need."

The Groundhog Day Associations

a: Bulimia ~
b: being stuck in a time loop

What: "Living with bulimia is like being stuck in a time loop, a metaphorical 'Groundhog Day', where the same events and actions are ultimately doomed to be repeated, over and over again. Each image is a depiction of an aspect of my daily life with bulimia, they provide a view of bulimia from my own perspective, as someone who is dealing with this disease. What I found interesting about creating this series of photographs, is that being faced with the realities that I had captured using my camera, became a means of photo-therapy to aid me in dealing with my bulimia."

a: bulimia ~
b: a living death

What:

"Having anorexia and bulimia is like a living death, and many victims have suffered abuse, molestation, or mistreatment long before the illness took hold, so they've had pretty much hellish lives, even if everything looked OK from the outside. I didn't want attention, I wanted to die because I didn't think I deserved to live, because I blamed myself for the mistreatment I suffered. No one who hasn't been there has any right to tell me what I experienced was something other than what it was. YOU CAN'T JUDGE WHAT YOU HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED!"

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
