It All About Equilibrium...

a: Buffer ~
b: a shock absorber

What: "An acid-base buffer is like a shock absorber-something to prevent a disturbance while retaining the original conditions or structure" This is from page 196 of the linked book.

H+ Sponge?

a: Buffer ~
b: a hydrogen sponge

What: "pH is all about the equilibrium between free hydrogen ions (technically H3O) and hydrogen bound to it's conjugate base. The more likely that a hydrogen ion will disassociate from its base, the lower it will drive the pH. With a buffer solution the amount of hydrogen ions that will associate or disassociate varies greatly over a small range of free hydrogen concentration (pH). Essentially, a buffer is like a hydrogen sponge. The hydrogen ions are still there, but if they're in the sponge, they aren't contributing to the pH."

It Cusion The Blow....

a: Buffer ~
b: pillow

What: "You are fighting a buffer. you need to break the buffer in order to drop the pH and not have it rebound. The buffer is like a pillow which protects the solution from taking wild pH swings. It is the KH (carbonate hardness) not the GH (generall hardness) that is givng you trouble"

A Base Bank....

a: The buffer ~
b: an alkalinity bank

What: "The buffer is like an alkalinity bank. If something in the tank is causing the water to go acidic (dead fish, detritus etc), then withdrawals must be made from the bank (such as my wife does) to keep the ph level up. When the alkalinity bank gets low (such as my bank account), then there isn't enough reserve to keep the ph in place. A good dKH level is 8-12 dKH. Much higher than that can cause calcium to precipitate. Hope this is clear for you. James (Salty Dog)> A million thanks!

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
