Antibodies
a: Antibody ~
b: the search dog of a cop
What: "How phage and antibody works is that the antibody is like the search dog of a cop, it binds itself to infectious particles.".....This is a novel analogy and appropriate. The specificity of a dog's nose is analogous to the specificity of an antibody.

Look At Me.......
a: Antibody ~
b: a little strobe lite
What: "An antibody is like a little strobe light that your immune system makes to tag what it thinks is an invader...or a dead cell that needs to be cleared out...or a cancer cell."

Very Small With A Loud Voice
a: Antibody ~
b: marine reconnaissance unit
What: An antibody binding to it's antigen sets off an amplification cascade. This small molecule changes its configuration and let the rest of the immune system know that it has found an invading entity and that you should come and attack it. Likewise a marine recon unit is small focused and moves really quick, while the rest of the marine core is big and dumb and moves slowly, but ultimately very powerfully, if it know where to go. So, this small group of marines signals the whole division where to attack in mass the way antibody binding event signals the whole immune system.

Look Here I'm An Invader Or Maybe Not...
a: Antibody ~
b: a footprint marker
What: "This antibody is like a footprint marker leading back to the "invader"---it can tell us what the body sees as foreign."

A Toy Arrow?
a: Antibody ~
b: a toy arrow with a rubber suction cup
What: "An antibody is like one of those toy arrows with a rubber sucker at there tip- all it can do is stick to it's target, not penetrate or kill it." p 28 of the linked book.

Boob Goes The Antigen......
a: Antibody ~
b: the fuse which activates the firecracker
What: "The mast cell is like the gunpowder in a firecracker, the antibody is like the fuse which activates the firecracker & the protein is like the spark which lights the fuse. All these elements are necessary for a fire cracker to go off, so too all these three are required for an allergic reaction to take place."

Epitope As The Teeth
a: Antibody ~
b: an uncut key, epitope is the teeth
What: Many antibody analogies floating around on the web. Many lock and key associations many things biologic; enzymes, antibodies, and others. But to be a little more specific, an antibody contains a specific region, an epitope which provides the specificity of an antibody's binding. Without this specific sequence, an antibody could not bind to a specific antigen. The epitope region is the teeth on the key.

A Sponge For Some Drugs......
a: Antibody ~
b: sponge
What: "The antibody is like a sponge," says Kim Janda, a professor of chemistry and immunology at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. "The drug comes in and it's soaked up, and you try to soak up as much as you can before it crosses the blood-brain barrier." This article discusses antibodies made in a laboratory to bind to addictive drugs. This is in contrast to antibodies made by the human body which are used to detect and destroy foreign organism within the body. They have similar chemistry, but their origin and function are different.

The First Step In The Process
a: Antibody ~
b: starter motor for the immune response
What: "The fourth function that is protective of immunoglobulin is that it activates a mediator system, called the complement system, which expands, if you will, by a factor of 2000 or 3000 its ability to do its job. The complement system is an important mediator. Some people have said that immunoglobulin is like the starter motor and the complement and phagocytic systems that depend on immunoglobulin for recognition are more like the real car or the engine."

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
