It Only Last So Long....

a: Antibiotic ~
b: a reserve oil field

What: "Think to yourself - each antibiotic is like a reserve oil field. We have used up most of the reserves and are finding fewer and fewer, our need (because of increased population and decreasing effectiveness) is increasing while the flow is rapidly decreasing"

Kill The Good The Bad And The Ugly

a: Antibiotic ~
b: carpet-bombing a battlefield

Antibiotic Resistance

a: Antibiotic Resistance ~
b: Pipe with multiple holes

What:

Antibiotic resistance - We tried to solve a big issue with small tools like blocking one hole on a leaky pipe with multiple holes. For some time the leakage of pipe reduces due to block in one hole but eventually, the pressure builds up the pipe can burst.

a: Antibiotic resistant bacteria ~
b: leopard that has no spots

What: These bugs have changed their physiology in a way that makes many antibiotics ineffective. One possible mechanism is a mutation on the site where the antibiotic normally binds with the cell wall. The mutation in the binding site is vaguely similar to a leopard that has no spots. Everyone knows that a leopard is a cat that has spots. If a leopard had a kitten with no spots, a typical observer would not identify it as a leopard. The proteins on surfaces of bacteria can mutate so that antibiotics can not recognize them; therefore they will not bind to the unrecognized protein and deactivate the bacteria. This leopard has lost its spots.

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
