American Culture Is Like A Prism

a: American culture ~
b: a prism

What: "Like the Indian society which has evolved over centuries and today, displays its gems of diversity, American culture is constantly being redefined by its new immigrants. Now American culture is like a prism, which illuminates the vibrant colors of every new culture within it. It is up to us to share our culture and educate others so that we may INTEGRATE, not assimilate into the American culture and help dispel prejudice and fear."

American culture is like a sponge

a: American culture ~
b: a sponge

What: "Godard argues American culture is like a sponge that absorbs the cultures of other countries, but leaves a sticky residue of history behind that makes the absorbed culture meaningless. All of the parties are doing this with wedge issues that divide and conquer the polity. Pick a wedge issue and watch what's going on. The net effect is to deflect attention away from the degree of corruption of both parties.

b: Anglosphere

What:

American exceptionalism is like the "Anglosphere" -- an idea based on the exceptionalism of the English-speaking peoples. You can believe in the idea and act on it -- it could very well be true -- but if you talk about it too much it will really get on people's nerves.

chaos of American culture

a: chaos of American culture ~
b: leading a small patrol through enemy-occupied territory

What: "Leading a family through the chaos of American culture is like leading a small patrol through enemy-occupied territory. And the casualties in this war are as real as the names etched on the Vietnam Memorial." (Quoted from Point Man, by Steve Farrar)"

American Corporate Stalinism

a: An american office manager ~
b: Soviet bureaucrat

What: "She didn't insist too much on what she was telling us, and it became clear she was in a position similar to that of a veteran Soviet bureaucrat who must work on two levels at once: reality and official ideology". This is a great essay that's more about working with your hands, but it makes some great points about the mindset of the contemporary American organizational style. Well worth reading.

a: Central American democracy ~
b: desert flower

What:

"Central American democracy is like a desert flower in a very parched land; fed by intermittent rainfall, it quickly blooms and dies. This is not true of Costa Rica and Belize, of course, and some would say it is not true of Nicaragua. For most of these countries, the military is the political force whether or not civilians are the titular heads of government. This has been true for many years and the drug trade has not cause"

It's Not A System

a: American health care system ~
b: buying a car by parts

What:

"O'Kane, of the NCQA, trots out a metaphor that she's heard at health care conferences she's attended over the years. "The American health care system is like buying a car where they come and put the parts on your lawn. What we're all looking for is the entity that puts it all together and that is able to be accountable for the performance of the vehicle, rather than whether you got good spark plugs."

If this is a system, it's not a very
good one.

b: space and time

What:

"However, the overwhelming majority of people in Washington, both Democrats and Republicans, are proud supporters of global capitalism and the imperialism that goes along with it. And why wouldn't they be? Money and American politics is like space and time, they just go together."

Challenging American culture is like attacking ...

a: Challenging American culture ~
b: attacking Mom and Apple Pie

What: "Living outside of cultural norms is difficult because we all want acceptance. Challenging American culture is like attacking Mom and Apple Pie. It is infinitely more difficult than sharing your faith with a stranger or even moving to another part of the world. Confronting American culture in America is like fighting a grizzly in his den."

The Dr. Cartel?

a: American medical association ~
b: another lobby group

What: "Yes, Americans want health-care reform, and Obama is right that America's health-care system is not providing value for money. But, Obama is barking up the wrong tree(s.) In my humble opinion, here are few suggestions: - American Medical Association is like another lobby group, AMA essentially controls how many students can get into medical schools. This is dumb. We should increase the number of medical students, increase the supply of doctors, with more supply, the cost will come down."

Ama Stuff Is No Good...

Everyone Agrees

a: American medical association ~
b: a cartel.... that has restricted health care

What: "The American Medical Association is like a cartel or Union that has restricted the supply of health care driving up prices, along with the cartel of drug companies tht use the FDA to restrict supply of medicines. This is about to get much worse as the ratio of over 65 to working age population drops from 1:3 to 1:2 over the next 20 years. An increasing percentage of the health care will be paid by the Government with dollars they create out of thin air."

Ama Not Deserving Of Respect......

a: American medical association ~
b: a union for doctors

What: "The American Medical Association is like a union for doctors. The AMA is typically given the kind of respect that the public gives to doctors, but it is a lobbying organization that has always profited from selling its influence. Its entire history, the AMA has behaved more like a greedy, for-profit corporation than like a public-interest group and it has promoted drugs and even tobacco in exchange for corporate cash."

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
