An Experiment

a: Acetylcholine ~
b: a halfback

What: "The fact that inhibition of an enzyme keeps the muscle contracted can be puzzling. To help them understand, the students are asked to consider analogies like a "double negative" or another from football: The neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, is like a halfback. The enzyme is the linebacker; it stops the halfback. If you block the linebacker, the halfback can keep running. Pesticides block the linebacker, allowing the signal to continue."

Hmmmmm........

a: Acetylcholine ~
b: an interface between brain and body

What: "Acetylcholine is like an interface between the conscious brain, and the body. It is involved in all the senses, all muscle control, both voluntry and involuntry, and also memory and the thought process."

What: I read this somewhere. Nerves are somewhat like electrical cables in that they can transmit a signal by a electrical process.

METAMIA is a free database of analogy and metaphor. Anyone can contribute or search. The subject matter can be anything. Science is popular, but poetry is encouraged. The goal is to integrate our fluid muses with the stark literalism of a relational database. Metamia is like a girdle for your muses, a cognitive girdle.
