Lost (The TV show)

a: Lost ~
b: Gilligan's Island with Jungian Archetypes

What: I only watched one of the pilot episodes when this show first came out. It was the episode were some guys gets sucked into the jet's engine. The DVDs are at the Sunnyvale, CA library, so I checked out season 1 and 2 and started watching. It's an impressive show, with good acting, story lines and great scenery. Then the strange-ness came up. What makes this show click? It integrates, very well, great story lines and great acting with Jungian Archetypes. An Archetype is an in-born symbol that human beings use to relate to life and to each other. On the DVD there was an interview with the Abrams, who's the producer. He made a joke about the whole island being a turtle. I believe he was referring to Jung's quote about Freud, fishing on the back of a whale. The link has some Archetypes listed and it's not too difficult to match them to some of the characters on this show.
