"Cortical Maps. Sensory cortex typically organizes into larger scale structures called maps (on the order of multiple cm 2 of cortex). By far the most well studied are the cortical maps of the sensory cortex, called topographic maps, because the arrangement of receptive fields of neurons in the sensory cortex is like a map of the sensory world."
