Mechanical Miscegenation
a: Putting campagnolo parts on a japanese frame ~
b: Bicycle miscegenation
What: It is simply the desire for mechanical homogeneity. There are a quite a few people who collect Italian vintage bikes. Most, if not all of these bikes came with Campagnolo components: brakes, shifters, etc. Someone I know got fussy about having Japanese components on an old steel Italian bike frame. He was a bit perturbed by the whole thing. "It's just not right", he'd say. It was kinda like the comments I heard from 2 older guys in San Francisco, when a bi-racial couple walked in from of them. "I'm glad that's not my daughter", grumble, grumble. It's an attitude inspired by the need for purity and homogeneity: mechanical, biological and cultural. There is very little cultural or biological purity in California currently, so people are getting their purity and homogeneity from mechanical sources.
