What: When a car hits an object at speed, the hood can be smashed and rumpled by the collision. This is a physical change. When such a collision occurs, the paint on the surface of the hood is often cracked and exposed to air. If the vehicle is allowed to sit in the open for an extended period of time, the exposed metal, assuming that it is steel, will begin to oxidize or rust. The rust formation on the crumpled hood is a chemical change. The oxygen in the air is changing the oxidation state of the steel which changes its appearance.
