a: Splitting an infinitive ~
b: eating cookies without milk

What: "I would beg to differ. The infinitive functions as one single unit of meaning. Splitting an infinitive is like eating cookies without milk, you just shouldn't eat one without the other. When I come across a split infinitive in print, it is the equivalent to nails scratching on a chalkboard. Immediately I find something seems wrong in the sentence, and I have to fix the sentence in my mind before I can continue reading. For that brief second, the stars seem out of alignment, and the world is about to end."
