What: "No way of forecasting it and no way of avoiding the consequences. I don't believe in fate though it is incidents like this why I can see how some do. What I do believe in, and I'm sure Roger and all who work in the hills do, is that mountaineering is like a mind enhancing drug. The rewards are a deep personal fulfilment that is exceedingly difficult to describe to those who have no experience of it. It is a great pity that a man with such a wealth of knowledge and experience should be taken from us in such a way."
