a: Ligand-gated channels ~
b: enzymes

What:

"Ligand-gated channels are like enzymes in that they exhibit great specificity in the ligands that they bind. Binding drives the channel into its open state. One channel may be opened by acetylcholine (ACh) and ignore dopamine, whereas another may be opened by dopamine and be totally insensitive to ACh. As a rule, a particular channel type recognizes just one natural ligand."
