a: Interstellar absorption ~
b: a fog in the forest

What: "In the forest analogy, interstellar absorption is like a fog in the forest. Even though the forest might be infinite, the fog doesn't allow you to see much of it. The Milky Way in that image is a long thin strip of woodland. Look north or south and you can see the fields beyond the forest. Look east or west and you see more trees, a darker forest, but also fog hiding even more trees."
