"I was seeking drama," says Pickett, whose ballet is set to the music of Rachmaninoff and influenced by works of great literature. "Creating a ballet is like writing a novel. It's [about] seeing your setting: The mood you are creating is the lighting, the stage is stenography and the language comes out in the steps."
